A Letter to the Editor
2 Feb 2008

Firstly, congratulations on your excellent newsletter. As a relative newcomer to Langford Village, I've really settled into life in Langford.

The village seems a great and welcoming place to live but without trying to sound too negative, I have two real points that I find disappointing :

Litter
In the winter months when the hedgerows are without their leaves, it is very evident just how much rubbish/litter collects in the bushes alongside the various paths. This really detracts from the overall attractiveness of the village. The paths I follow are mostly between Avocet Way, past the local primary school to the central flood-plain area. Would it be possible to organise a "litter hit squad" on a weekend before the foliage blossoms to address the litter on these paths? Maybe the council would agree to provide a skip or two to put the rubbish in?

Jubilee Lake
I am very fortunate in that I walk my dog around Jubilee lake every morning. This really can be a magical place. However, once again it is spoilt by some small points (see below). Again, these points could be addressed by a hit squad one weekend, or even creating a sub-group "Friends of Jubilee Lake". Again if the council were able to provide a skip or two to take the rubbish away? :

  1. an abundance of litter.
  2. the north of the lake tends to "clog-up" with rubbish which could be cleared relatively easily
  3. the lake itself is suffering from teenage pranks......it now contains at least 2 supermarket trolleys, a push bike and a scooter that I am aware of.
  4. some of the foliage is overgrown, especially on the little island in the lake thereby limiting the safe places for the ducks and other birds.

I welcome your committees view on these points and if there is anything I can do to help then please call on me. As a newcomer I do not know the wider community so need your help to establish the said "hit squads".
